October is Texas Wine Month, so we want to tell you about just a few of the tasting rooms of Texas wineries you can visit in downtown Fredericksburg. They’re all within a few blocks of your luxury lodging at the Wine Country Cottages and Wine Country Farmhouse, and not too far from the Marketplatz on Main Street. Many feature food, entertainment and special events as well as wine tastings. The last tasting typically starts 15-30 minutes prior to closing time. Please note that hours vary, and they may have special limitations on busy Saturdays. A number of the wines you can sample are award-wining. However, wine lovers’ tastes vary widely, so you may wish to explore the wineries’ individual websites and travelers’ reviews for more detailed information and wines currently available.
The setting of Pontotoc Vineyard’s Weingarten is an authentic weinkeller located in a stone walled courtyard just a two block stroll toward the Marketplatz. It’s a great choice for sharing a picnic including their pastries paired with their wines. Pontotoc Vineyard makes their award-winning wines from hand harvested and hand selected grapes grown in the Texas Hill Country. At least a portion of the grapes in all their wines are grown at Pontotoc Vineyard. They specialize in medium to full bodied red wines which include an Estate Tempranillo, Smoothing Iron Mountain which typically is a blend of Tempranillo with Alicante Bouschet and sometimes Merlot, and San Fernando Academy, a blend that may include a number of varietals including Syrah, Tempranillo, and Alicante Bouschet, and sometimes Merlot, Malbec, and/or Mourvèdre.
